III. How it Works
Any author wanting to test my services is entitled to a free trial. During this trial, I will edit 1,000 words from your manuscript completely for free. Afterward, I will provide you with a short editorial document detailing the large issues and strengths within those 1,000 words. Afterward, authors may decide to request my services, starting with an initial 10-page edit. Participating in this free trial does not require any author to contract further services. If we aren't the best fit, we can agree to simply move on. Every author deserves to find the right editor for them, and sometimes, Best Edition Editing may simply be the wrong fit.
Before I quote each author, I complete an initial 10-page edit for the low price of $25. In this edit, I go through your first ten pages with a fine-tooth comb, deducing what type of edit you need most while providing you with detailed editorial feedback. After this short 10-page edit, I will provide you with a suggestion for what type of edit I believe your manuscript needs as well as a quote for this service. In my experience, authors don’t always know exactly what their book needs. Through this service, I answer that question for you while also providing a discount for your first ten pages.
Not all writers can sit down and draft an entire book without a plan, yet many people don’t even know where to start. Through my detailed manuscript coaching, I will help you outline your story, create your characters, and form your plot. I also guide fantasy writers through world-building. If so desired, I can lead you through a chapter-by-chapter outline of your novel as well. My base rate for this service is $50 per hour-long coaching session. View Coaching Special and Mini- Session Special at the bottom of this page for discounts on your first session.
Sometimes, when a manuscript is completed, authors don’t know what they can do to fix it. It is incredibly difficult to sort out the plot issues, character struggles, and pacing errors in your manuscript, especially for first-time authors. Through this service, I will do all the heavy lifting for you. I will find those issues for you and tell you how I suggest you fix them. Through a developmental edit, you can turn your manuscript into a work of pure literature. The base rate for this service is $40 an hour, and the price of the full manuscript is dependent on the quote you receive from your initial 10-page edit.
Line editing is specific to the readability of a novel. Through this process, I read your manuscript sentence-by-sentence, checking for errors in the general flow of the story and looking specifically at details like word choice and sentence structure. I will help your manuscript start to sound like a polished book. Also, I often will point out overused words, descriptions, and phrases within the manuscript itself. The base rate for this service is $35 an hour, and the price of the full manuscript is dependent on the quote you receive from your initial 10-page edit.
Copyediting is one of the last steps in the editorial process, second only to proofreading. This type of editing goes through your manuscripts word-by-word and comma-by-comma, fixing punctuation, spelling, and general grammar errors. It also aids authors with conciseness issues and checks the accuracy of certain facts. As a part of this process, I can help you conform your manuscript to Chicago Style, which is the typically accepted novel-writing style guide. The base rate for this service is $30 an hour, and the price of the full manuscript is dependent on the quote you receive from your initial 10-page edit.
Instead of hiring a full copywriter, some business owners prefer to write their own copy and hire a cheaper web editor to make their copy sound polished. This service is geared towards those business owners. I will take your already-written copy and fix any errors with wording, punctuation, and overall tone. My base rate for this service is $25 per page.
When creating a website, business owners need web copy to fill each of the pages. However, if this copy is not well-written, it can quickly steer people away from their business, giving customers the impression that the business isn’t professional. Through my copywriting service, I will fix this issue entirely for you, writing detailed and professional copy for as many web pages as you need. At the beginning of the process, I will send you a form to fill out. Once that form is filled out and the service is paid for, I will begin to write your detailed copy. My base rate for this service is $45 per page.
II. Each of my editorial services, minus coaching and web editing, begins with an initial 10-page edit of your work. After this edit, I recommend a service to my clients, based on what I believe their manuscript needs. Along with this, I provide a quote for how much the full cost of one round of manuscript edits will cost. After the first round, writers can choose to revise the rest on their own, or they can implement the edits and ask for a second round.
III. Individual rounds of manuscript edits involve me reading through the manuscript in its entirety while providing detailed comments and feedback on what can be improved and what’s working particularly well. Most writers can expect these edits to take a month per 50,000 words, although some writers might take a little more time and some might take a little less. However, the specific time frame will be specified in the editorial contract, which I draft after the initial 10-page edit.
IV. Once the author receives their edits back, the process can become quite collaborative. If an author disagrees with a suggested edit or wants more context, we can open up a discussion on why I provided said edit and alternative ways to fix the issue. At the end of the day, though, you are the author. You do not have to take every edit I offer. In fact, I hope you don’t. My edits are suggestions, but that does not mean that every suggestion is going to fit your vision.
V. After the initial round of edits, authors can choose to request a second round of edits on their revisions, or they can request to move up a level in edits (going from developmental edits to line edits or line edits to copyedits). If authors choose to come back for a second round of the same type of edits, they will receive a discount of $5 less per hour. However, if they move up a level, the price will remain the same.
